Who should have UFE? You may be a candidate for UFE if you fit into any of the following categories: Women who have symptomatic uterine fibroids Women who want to retain their uterus Women who do not desire surgery Women who may be poor surgical candidates, e.g., women who suffer from obesity, bleeding disorders or anemia Once you have determined that you may be a candidate for UFE based upon the above criteria, then you will need some physician input to help you decide how to best treat your symptomatic fibroids. A consultation with an interventional radiologist (IR) will educate you about the UFE procedure and will determine if you are a candidate for the procedure. The role of the IR is to be the specialist in this procedure, providing you clinical information regarding how UFE works to treat symptomatic fibroids. The IR admits you to the hospital for the procedure, provides post-procedure follow-up and deals with any questions or concerns that may arise. The IR informs your primary care physician and OB/GYN of the care given to you and the post procedure follow-up plan.
